| Kids Patriotic Costumes for Halloween - Associated Content Posted: 19 Oct 2010 06:46 AM PDT Scary Halloween costumes are fun, but sometimes kids want to do something different. Patriotic Halloween costumes are different, and kids can get creative with these Halloween costumes. Great Halloween Statue of Liberty Halloween Costume The Statue of Liberty costume is a neat Halloween costume idea for girls. This simple Halloween costume can be made using cardboard for the crown and torch, and an old sheet can be dyed green and worn as a wrap-around. Green face paint completes the Statue of Liberty Halloween costume. Uncle Sam Halloween Costume The Uncle Sam Halloween costume is great for young boys. Making a homemade Halloween costume for your Uncle Sam can be simple- white shirt, blue jacket, and red pants. You can fashion a red, white, and blue striped hat with stars out of cardboard. The beard for this Halloween costume idea can be made using a paper cut out in a beard shape. Glue cotton balls to the shape and attach a string to keep the beard in place. Boys can dress up for Halloween as a former or current U.S. President, and girls can dress up as one of the First Ladies. Most parts of the U.S. President Halloween Costume can be found at home- a nice suit for the boys, and a pretty dress for girls dressing as the First Lady. Masks of U.S. Presidents are easy to find, but for those that are older, such as George Washington, using a white wig and colonial clothing would work better. Girls can wear a white wig. Wearing the stars and stripes as a Halloween costume is simple. One way to dress up on Halloween as a U.S. Flag is to wear an actual U.S. Flag as a wrap around. Another option for the U.S. Flag Halloween costume is to wear red and white striped pants, a blue shirt, and paint stars on the face. | Row house fire kills woman, 4 kids in central Pa. - Deseret News Posted: 19 Oct 2010 06:31 AM PDT Published: Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010 7:34 a.m. MDT HARRISBURG, Pa. — Fire ripped through a row house in central Pennsylvania on Monday evening, killing five people, including four young children, and spreading to several other homes, authorities said. Two white brick houses in uptown Harrisburg were already ablaze when firefighters arrived, Fire Chief Robert Talloni said. A plume of smoke could be seen for miles. Battalion Chief Daniel Hartman told The Patriot-News that when emergency crews arrived, "People were yelling, 'The kids were inside!'" The fire was reported between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Firefighters were on scene within three minutes, but were unable to rescue anyone, said Chuck Ardo, a spokesman for the mayor's office. A 48-year-old woman and four children ranging in age from 2 to 4 were killed, Ardo said. Their names were not immediately available. Dauphin County Coroner Graham Hetrick scheduled a news conference for late Tuesday morning to discuss the blaze. Fire officials said the home had smoke detectors, but they were not functioning. They said at least four homes appeared to be uninhabitable. Federal, state, county and city investigators are trying to determine the cause.
