A new Mexican restaurant has opened at 2017 W. Thomas St., Hammond, and a new Chinese restaurant at 1320 N. Morrison Blvd. in the Times Square shopping center. Their menu seems complete: chalupas, burritos, quesadillas, chimi-changas, fajitas, tacos, enchiladas; dinner and lunch specials, children's plates, side orders, appetizers, restaurant specials and even American dishes, like chicken strip dinners or a hamburger plate, and vegetarian specials; domestic and imported beer, wine, margaritas, daiquiris, pina coladas and of course, Tequila drinks. China Wok, offering Chinese food in Hunan, Szechuan and Cantonese cuisine, is holding its grand opening and offering discount coupons. General Manager Jimmy Xiao, along with employees Cindy Xiao and Helen Zheng welcomed me into their cozy dine-in/take-out establishment on Friday. The restaurant is the first location on the Northshore for owner Yun Liang who also owns China Taste in New Orleans. China Wok offers lunch specials from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and dinner combinations all day. Just a few of the specials include chicken with broccoli, Moo Goo Gai Pan, chicken lo mein, chicken egg foo yung, shrimp lo mein, Szuhuan beef and Human beef. Flip the menu over for appetizers, soups, fried rice, lo mein, chop suey, chicken, beef, seafood, vegetable, family combos and a heart-healthy selection. The restaurant is open seven days a week. Place an order at 345-6878 or 345-8813. Ladies looking for something chic and affordable should drop in at Chic Boutique, Morgan Brekeen's clothing and accessory shop at 19450 Florida Blvd. in Albany, right on Hwy. 190. She tells me she's been open two years and is the first and only boutique of its kind in Albany. Morgan, from Zachary, met and married Cody Jenkins, an Albany native, while she was attending Southeastern Louisiana University majoring in marketing and mass communication. She loves fashion and thought what the area needed is a place where women can find what they're looking for without breaking the family budget. "I wanted to open a store where everyone who walked through my door could afford something," she said. Once the customer finds an outfit, Morgan can help her find the perfect purse, shoes, jewelry, belt and even sunglasses. Morgan is busy right now helping girls plan their proms, and if she doesn't have quite what they're looking for, she can order it. She has a head for fashion and will e-mail photos to the customer with suggestions for a dress she can find. Morgan stocks sizes from 0 to plus sizes in styles for every taste. Said she attends fashion markets in Las Vegas three times a year, bringing her mother-in-law along to help her choose styles for the mature woman. While shopping is always fun, she said it's a little stressful. "I have to order six months of clothes in three days," Morgan said. New inventory arrives every two weeks, so if you don't see something you like, wait and come back. I dropped in Deja vu Interiors downtown last week and found a wicker chaise and dresser I liked, but they had already been sold. Co-owner Kristin Dowdy tells me items come in and are sold sometimes the same day. The same goes with clothing items in the new Deja vu Kids side. She's been running ads in The Daily Star, and folks are catching on to the concept at Deja vu. Their motto is "Find a Treasure, Save a Fortune." They accept furniture of all kinds, mirrors, trunks, lamps, outdoor furniture, baby furniture, antiques and decorating accessories, like art work. The items are held on consignment, but lately she said that hasn't been very long. On the Deja vu Kids side, she's accepting kids clothing for resale. "Walk out with money or new clothes," she said. I found two darling purses, one Hannah Montana and one High School Musical themed, for my granddaughters. You can find Deja vu Interiors at 111 W. Charles St., behind the post office. Call 340-4863 and ask about their pickup service. Young entrepreneur and Baton Rouge native Marcus Michelli is bringing Doctor Computer to Hammond. The store will open May 14 at 1501 W. Thomas St., next to Rossie Furniture. The marketing major at Louisiana State University said he worked for a big industrial company and quit two years ago to start his own franchise. He has three stores in Louisiana, one in Florida and one in Ohio. He plans to have eight stores by year-end, expanding from Hammond to Slidell, New Orleans and LaPlace. His motto is "Why call a geek or nerd when you need a doctor?" Marcus said his niche is Apple iPhone and laptop repair, all services performed on site by five qualified techs. He's done the research: one is every 13 cell phone users has an iphone, which is an Apple product. He thinks as Apple continues to improve its product, it will take over the cell phone with its "smart phone." A fourth-generation model is set to hit the market in November. The techs are Southeastern Louisiana University computer and business majors who live in Hammond. Companywide, Marcus has 18 techs. Doctor Computer will also do business and residential work with "road techs" that go out and visit businesses, do maintenance service contracts, virus removal upgrades, and data recovery and backup. Marcus has been working in the Hammond store and will help open the store on May 14. Banners outside will mark the location, and a professional sign will be up by the end of May. "We can do anything your laptop desires," he said. Marcus said techs can work on Macs as well as PCs and is the only store in Louisiana that he knows of that will repair a second-generation iphone. He can do motherboard repair instead of replacement. "We're hoping the Hammond community will give us a shot at their business," Marcus said. DDD Director Terry Lynn Smith tells me there were three winners in the 2010 Art in April Champagne Cocktail Challenge. She said everyone did a wonderful job with their cocktail concoctions, and the guests for the first new DDD event were thrilled with the opportunity to rate each. Congratulations go to Ben Gerarve with Change Clothes, Bobbi Fisse with The Makeup Store and Jimmy Hebert and Tommy Masaracchia with Tope La Restaurant. Two of the event guests won gift bags courtesy of many of the downtown merchants. Billie Billiot of Holden and Keith Gandolfo of Ponchatoula won the drawing and each received a bottle of champagne and two champagne flutes; gift certificates for dinner, facials and massages; a summer fun kit; hand-made soaps; chocolates and more. I've been spring cleaning my closets and brought three pairs of shoes for refurbishing to Joe Perrone at Perrone's Shoe Service. I joked with him that if he ever retired, lots of shoes would get tossed out before their time. He said he has no plans to retire anytime soon, thank goodness. He has been repairing shoes in Hammond for more than 25 years. He taught the business to his sons, Joey and Jeff. One is an engineer and the other a business owner, so neither will continue the trade. Hopefully, someone else will come along to fill his shoes, no pun intended. And speaking of retirement, Don Boihem, Entergy customer service manager, our go-to person whenever there are power outages during storms, said he's retiring at the end of May. He said he plans to "go fishing during the week when it's not raining." Congratulations, Don. Five Filters featured article: The Art of Looking Prime Ministerial - The 2010 UK General Election.
