Glendale kids' shop sells locally made crafts - AZCentral.com

Special for The Republic

Pink walls with brown polka dots adorn the walls of the whimsical children's shop in downtown Glendale that's filled with children's merchandise made largely by local crafters.

Jamie Tasche, a 37-year-old mother of three, opened Polkadots & Pinwheels three months ago and said she uses local artists both to help the economy and to keep prices in her specialty shop low.

"I wanted to really try to help jump-start the economy," Tasche said. "By keeping it as local as possible, every penny is going to stay here in the Valley instead of me sending out money all across the U.S."

When shoppers buy from local merchants, $43 out of every $100 stays in the community, said Jim Mapstead, board chair of Local First Arizona, a non-profit advocate for local businesses.

When shoppers buy from national merchants, $15 out of every $100 spent stays in the state, he said.

"As people shop locally and support more locally owned businesses, that increases hiring opportunities, which increases income taxes to the state because more people are working," Mapstead said.

Vendors pay a monthly fee and commission on sales to keep their products in the store, with some artists being able to stock merchandise on a trial basis.

"We want to be that outlet for people who do crafts," Tasche said. "It's a year-round craft show for kids' stuff."

Shops on the south side of Glendale have a quick turnover, Tasche said, and many of the shops are only a few months old.

Don Rinehart, president of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, said the city's businesses have grappled with the effects of the dour economy.

"Glendale's probably fared better than most, but we've certainly been hit by it," Rinehart said. "Our folks have held up pretty well, and some areas of Glendale were hurt more than others."

Lorraine Pino, tourism manager at the Glendale Convention and Visitors Bureau, part of the city's marketing department, said increasing foot traffic to businesses outside the core of downtown Glendale is a priority.

"When we have those streets that are out of that core of the downtown area, that's just more opportunities to expand the footprint of the downtown area," Pino said. "We are definitely aware of some of our exterior shops on the outskirts of our core downtown and we want to do all we can to continue foot traffic through their doors."

The storefront next to Polkadots & Pinwheels is empty, and she plans to expand there in the future, she added.

"This side of Glendale has been rough for shops," Tasche said. "We're starting to build up our clientele, so we're trying to find ways to get the word out there that we're here."

Tasche said her shop is a product of being a single mother with a love for shopping and crafts.

"I basically raised my children on my own and I couldn't afford to buy my kids stuff," she said. "My dream was to have a boutique that was nice but affordable with high-end, quality products."

Polkadots & Pinwheels provides children's clothes and decor for infants to 10- to 12-year-olds, Tasche said, and crocheted hats and dresses from $15 to $22. Handmade tutus under $20 are some of her bestsellers.

"Customers love that it's so unique," Tasche said. "People who come in for baby-shower gifts can buy stuff that not everybody is giving."

Customer Michele Romero and her 11-month-old daughter Medelyn came into Polkadots & Pinwheels for a pink and black tutu. Romero said the shop fits her unique style.

"It's a variety. Everything looks vintage, but it's new," Romero said. "What I like too is that the tutus are cute, but they're not $40 or $50 each."

Tasche wants to eventually do a yearly fundraiser for groups like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Arizona, who helped pay for her living expenses 12 years ago while her 5-year-old daughter was undergoing treatment in Tucson.

"After I lost my daughter to cancer, every time I'd go out to the cemetery I'd take a pinwheel," she said. "Later, someone pointed out to me that the store was in a way named for her."

While her store carries both boys' and girls' products, she said seeing the faces of the girls who walk in is one of the best parts of her business.

"Little girls walk in, and I love hearing that deep breath, then they say, 'It's so pretty,' " Tasche said.
