| Washing clothes in cold water - Orlando Sentinel (blog) Posted: 13 Jan 2011 08:14 AM PST I've recently started washing all of our laundry in cold water. I've read different views on this, from using specific detergents for cold water, to clothes not being as clean, especially tough stains. Washing clothes accounts for about 14-15% of your total water usage, and about 90% of the energy used is to heat the water. Advancements is laundry detergents and washing machine manufacturing have made it possible to get even white clothes clean in cold water. I've been using our regular detergent and it seems to work fine in cold water. One of the downsides to washing in cold water may be that it does not dissolve detergent as quickly as warm or hot water. Another thing people mention is that they need to pre-treat some items with stains before washing in cold water, but wouldn't you do this anyway? Here are some other tips that might help you save more : Pre-soak clothes with tough stains. (We said that already.) Wait until you have a full load. Set the thermostat on your water heater to no more than 120 degrees. If you're thinking about buying a new washing machine, look for one with an Energy Star rating. They may save you as much as 50% in energy costs. They use less water: about 18-25 gallons per load as compared to 40 gallons in a standard machine. | Kardashian Sisters to Design Clothing and Accessories Line For Sears - Pop Eater Posted: 12 Jan 2011 02:56 PM PST The new line is set to hit 400 Sears stores in August, and analysts expect the collection to bring in $200-300 million in sales in its first year -- quite a projection for a chain that's looking to get its juniors department off the ground. On her website, Kim divulged that Sears was a clear choice for the sisters because they actually frequent the store. "We've always shopped at Sears, so we thought it was the perfect outlet for the Kardashian Kollection," she said. The "Kollection," which promises to incorporate each of the sisters' individual styles, is in for quite a challenge. We have a feeling it might be a bit tough to hit Kim's uber-glam aesthetic, Kourtney's classic sophistication and Khloe's bohemian edge in one cohesive collection. Despite the potential difficulties, the sisters' familiarity with branding their name will work to their advantage. They have already designed a line for retail chain Bebe and a QVC line called K-Dash. They operate Kardashian-branded retail stores in California, New York and Miami. We have a feeling that mom and manager Kris Jenner was jumping up and down when she got the call confirming Sears' agreement to collaborate with Kardashian Kollection. Hats off, Mama K. Keep earning that 15 percent. http://xml.channel.aol.com/xmlpublisher/fetch.v2.xml?option=expand_relative_urls&dataUrlNodes=uiConfig,feedConfig,entry&id=682252&pid=682251&uts=1294863925 http://www.popeater.com/mm_track/popeater/tv/?s_channel=us.tvpop&s_account=aolpopeater,aolsvc&omni=1&ke=1 http://cdn.channel.aol.com/cs_feed_v1_6/csfeedwrapper.swf Kim Kardashian Photos ©BAUER-GRIFFIN.COM Kim Kardashian makes a silly face as she gets a manicure and pedicure at a Beverly Hills nail salon with a friend.
