A Volusia County man was arrested Saturday morning after deputies said they received a complaint he had sexually abused two young children in his care.

Deputies said David Barberi, 57, is accused of abusing a 3-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl Friday night at his home on Ayesbury Circle just north of DeLand.

A relative who had gone to the home to drop off medicine for one of the children told deputies about 9 p.m. Friday that she had arrived to find Barberi in his underwear, with the boy naked and the girl putting her clothes back on with a sex toy in plain view.

Deputies said the relative took the children and left, taking them home to ask what had happened. The relative later called deputies, who interviewed the two children.

In those interviews, deputies said they were told Barberi had showered with the children, performed sexual acts on them, showed them pornographic videos on his computer and forced the children to perform sex acts on each other.

A sheriff's spokesman said the children told investigators that Friday wasn't the first time they'd been abused by Barberi.

"The children said the abuse had been going on for some time, but that they were afraid to tell because Barberi told them he would go to jail if they said anything," spokesman Gary Davidson said.

Investigators conducted a physical examination on the girl and found indications she was sexually abused.

Barberi was arrested Saturday morning and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach on charges of sexual battery and child abuse. Deputies said he may face further charges after investigators determine the contents of a computer and cell phone seized during the investigation.
