| Edie Falco: I Buy "Unisex" Clothes for My Kids to Save Money - US Magazine Posted: 09 Aug 2010 09:29 AM PDT Edie Falco doesn't go overboard shopping for her children, Anderson and Macy. "It's hard to justify spending a lot of money on kid's clothes because they grow out of them in five minutes," Falco, 47, tells UsMagazine.com. "And my kids don't really care what they wear." PHOTOS & VIDEO: Hollywood's hottest moms "So I occasionally buy something for my son and he wears it until he grows out of it, and my daughter wears it," the Nurse Jackie star goes on. "I just make sure that it's unisex." PHOTOS: Stars' favorite jeans -- and where to buy! Falco, who adopted her Anderson in March 2005 and Macy in April 2008, says she asks her 94-year-old grandmother for parenting advice. "[She] raised five kids who back in the day was doing everything. Grandpa was out making the money, and grandma was feeding one kid with her hand and rocking another kid in the cradle with her foot," says Falco. The biggest lesson? "She would explain to me about patience. It's about teaching yourself to be patient. We all move at a pace and get used to it. And then you're with kids who have their own schedule and own time frame. Part of me wants to just say 'C'mon let's go.' But they're not having it." "You can come to loggerheads if you don't learn how to breathe and learn how to let them take the time they need. You have to let them be sometimes -- to let them look at a book to let them brush their teeth," adds the Emmy winner. | How to Get Kids Excited for School - Associated Content Posted: 09 Aug 2010 09:14 AM PDT Whether they are going to school for their 7th year or their 1st year, it's important for school to be a good experience for your kids. In order to make it a good experience, you have to start getting them ready for Have kids shop for school supplies with you Let them pick out a new first day outfit Once your kids hit the age where they like clothes, let them pick out one new outfit for the first day of school (it may be wise to give them a set budget). You can either shop together or (if they are older) let them shop at the mall with one of their friends. Have a countdown For younger kids, it may be fun for them to have a countdown calendar. You can find some at craft stores like Hobby Lobby or Michael's, or you can make one with your kids. At worst, even a post-it note pad would work. This idea I got from a friend of mine. Her family put one prize or thing to do on each day, and as the countdown got smaller and smaller, the prizes got better and better. She has younger kids, so I would recommend this for kids 10 and under. Her prizes weren't very big, some of them were "Day at the park" or "30 minutes of play time with Dad," not necessarily things that cost, but they were things her kids would like (her son loves more than anything in the world to play football with his dad). Be excited yourself Your kids will be excited if you are excited. If they are returning to school, let them know you are proud of what they have done in the previous years and you can't wait for what they will do this year. If it's their first year, they may not be sure of what to expect, so if you are excited, they know it must be fun. | Love of fine kids clothes turns into business for mom - WRAL Posted: 08 Aug 2010 07:24 PM PDT Posted: 10:31 p.m. yesterday Kelly Rives of Raleigh runs a sort of mini-empire of high-end children's consignment sales. With the help of friends and family, her Divine Consign Show is in Raleigh and four other cities in the southeast, including Charlotte and Atlanta. I'm sure it's not at all what the mom of three expected when she started the first sale from her home six years ago. Her hope was to fuel her love of fine, smocked clothing for her girls by selling the pieces they'd grown out of, buying some gently used bigger sizes and earning a bit of money to buy some new outfits as well. But Rives found a niche. Her Raleigh sales now include about half consignment pieces and half new overstocks from trunk shows and children's boutiques. The prices might be a little higher than what you're used to if you're a consignment sale regular. But all the brands accepted for the sale are high quality. And you'll find lots of options for special occasions too. In sales in some of the other cities, Rives only sells new boutique and trunk show overstocks, which is why the sale's name has morphed into the Divine Children's Show. But Rives tells me it likely always will be the Divine Consign Show in Raleigh since she'll always include consignment pieces. While Rives first focused mainly on the clothing she loved best, she's since branched out to include more contemporary styles and brands as well. During the last sale, for instance, I bought a pair of new 6 to 12 month Zutano shorts and a nearly new Boden sweatshirt for my five-year-old, each for about $7. The shorts were probably originally about $13. The sweatshirt probably retailed for about $40 to $50. The Divine Consign Show is this week in Raleigh, starting Tuesday when grandparents can shop early from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. New moms can shop early from 8 a.m .to 9 a.m. Wednesday. And the public is welcome from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday (when many items are 50 percent off). Click here for details. The sale is at Falls Pointe Shopping Center at the intersection of Falls of Neuse and Durant roads in the shopping center with the Kohl's and Harris Teeter. It's a new location for Rives, who has held many of the sales in the Quail Hollow area, and she hopes her fans in the inside the Beltline and North HIlls areas follow her there. It's about a 15 minute drive. Learn more about Kelly and the sale in the video. Divine Consign is one of four consignment sales in the Triangle this week.
