MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Hennepin County District judge has ordered two years probation for a Golden Valley day care provider accused of restraining children by pinning their clothing to their mattresses.
Seventy-year-old Arvilla Marie Meinhardt says she used the pins only because she feared the children would jump out of their cribs and hurt themselves.
Some parents at Tuesday's hearing wept openly as others told the judge how Meinhardt's restraints affected their children. One parent, identified only as L.V., said her daughter told her all the children would cry at nap time.
Judge Robert Small told Meinhardt she could not provide day care while on probation and if she violated its terms she would spend a year in jail. Meinhardt was also ordered to do a day of community service.
The Star Tribune says Meinhardt pleaded guilty to two counts of gross misdemeanor child endangerment.
