ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. - It was another emotional day for the family of a Rockdale County deputy, killed in the line of duty two weeks ago.

This time, the emotions were not only about what was taken from them. But also, what the community was doing to give back.

Because of what happened Saturday, Deputy Brian Mahaffey's widow, and two young children will receive thousands of dollars.

But as family said, this benefit was not just about money -- it was also about having a shoulder to cry on, during the toughest time in their lives.

Every summer outfit off the rack, every bite of burrito, and penny spent on pizza Saturday gave Rockdale County Deputy Brian Mahaffey's family a little more stability.

Their world has been upside down, in the two weeks since his murder.

"We lost our son. I lost my baby. And in that time, since then, that's he's been gone we've actually gained a community," said Brian Mahaffey's father, Terry Mahaffey.

All day Saturday, stores in the Honey Creek Village strip mall turned over a percentage of their sales to Mahaffey's memorial fund.

The owner of a kids clothing shop donated everything.

"I had someone else who came out and said, you're donating 100 percent, isn't that a little over the top? And I said, no, Brian gave 100 percent for us. So it's the least we can do, 100 percent for him, at least one day," said store owner Kelley Collins.

By the end of the day, organizers believe they will have collected about $25,000. And all of that money will go to the deputy's widow and two young children.

"It's going to help. It's not going to replace my son, it's not going to bring him back. But hopefully it will help them to survive and get along. And to be able to not have to worry so much about, can I pay the electric bill. Can I eat? Can I buy diapers today?" said Terry Mahaffey.

Muhaffey was taken from his family, the day after his 28th birthday. According to investigators, he and other deputies were at a house rying to arrest Terry Brown on rape allegations. But investigators say Brown ambushed the deputies, hitting Mahaffey twice, before the other deputies shot him down.

In the two weeks since, the Mahaffey family says the support has been overwhelming.

"Today, just sitting out here, people are coming up and telling stories about my brother...I don't even know who they are, just telling stories how he helped them or how he did things for them, and it just touches you," said brother Chris Mahaffey.

The family says it seems like everyday they hear about new tributes to Mahaffey.

Several businesses are taking donations for the family. A memorial page on Facebook, now has more than 9,000 members and a few fellow deputies recently got a tattoo of his badge, so they say, he will always be with them.

What swim moms of tweens need to know - Examiner

Posted: 24 May 2010 08:58 AM PDT

As a swim mom for almost 8 seasons to a a kid, a tween, and a teen swimmer, I know what a joy swimming is for swimmers and their families.

Kids, tweens, and teens practice their swimming strokes through daily practices. Through daily practices kids, tweens, and teens learn about work ethic and perseverance. Swimming is a sport for the most and least athletic kids. In swimming, kids, tweens, and teens compete only against one opponent..themselves. Win or lose swimmers strive to better their times during swim meets.

Top 5 Tips for Swim Moms

1. Bring a paper and pen to record your swimmer's times. You can use the meet program or a paper plate, but a piece of paper will enable you to keep track of times. Keep a notepad with a pen in the cooler, so that you can record wins and personal best times.

2. Explain to your young swimmer that doing his or her best is more important than coming in first in the race or winning the heat.

3. Work out a family plan for meets when there is a concession stand. Let the kids buy food only after their races. Pack food and drink in a cooler. If every swimmer is buying from the concession stand it is hard to say no to your swimmer. You don't want your kids to load up on food and candy before a race. Instead let your kids buy food from the concession stand after they race.

4. If the meet is outside, scope out a shady spot for your family. A beach umbrella or a shaded collapsible awning come in handy at outdoor summer swim meets. Many pools will provide chairs or loungers, but it is always a good idea to bring a chair or two.

5. Bring extra towels. At indoor swim meets, kids will go through several towels as the heating and AC are often inconsistent. Bring a warmup suit so that kids can change in to warm clothing after drying themselves off after racing.
